This was the site of the last major battle of the Revolutionary war where General George Washington and the French trapped a major British force commanded by Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis in 1781. When Cornwallis was forced to surrender the British government was compelled to sue for peace granting the United States the freedom which was so hard fought.
