The Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse

Saint Augustine Field Trips: The oldest school house

Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse

This little schoolhouse was built during the Minorcan period, while Florida was under Spanish rule.   The building was constructed of red cedar and cypress, and joined together with wooden pegs and handmade nails.  The school still stands and welcomes visitors over 200 years later.

A tour of the school includes Disney-like animatronic figures dressed in clothing styles that were popular when the  school was open. You’ll watch and listen as the schoolmaster and students recreate some scenes from a typical school day many years ago.  The school also contains a display of artifacts and a tour of the garden grounds.
