Although there are 19 different museums the favorites for student Smithsonian field trips include the American History, Air And Space and Natural History Museums.
30 million people tour the Smithsonian every year. This popular destination for educational field trips began when the British scientist, James Smithson left his estate to the United States in the early 1800’s. His dream was to create an “Establishment for the increase & diffusion of knowledge among men.”
With this vision, President James Polk, on August 10, 1846, established the Smithsonian with the beginning of the construction of the first building, the Castle. From there James Smithson’s dream grew so that now the Smithsonian with its 19 museums and zoo are some of the most visited tourist attractions in Washington DC With over 136 million items in its collections, the Smithsonian is the largest museum system in the world.
While most of the Smithsonian locations are in Washington D.C., there are some other locations in New York City, Virginia, Panama, and other places as well. Some of the most popular Smithsonian museums to tour are the Museum of Natural Science, The Museum of American History and The Museum of Air and Space. Your student will find our Smithsonian field trip exciting, educational, memorable and fun!
