Oldest Jail and Florida Heritage Museum
Sheriff Joe Perry is in and giving tours of his jail! This facility, built in 1891 by Henry Flagler, is a student favorite. Sonshine visitors will be intrigued and challenged by the sheriff’s commentary on the 19th century system of justice and punishment. Students will also be shocked to find out that Sheriff Perry and his family lived in dangerously close proximity to the 72 prisoners. Another eye-opener for tour members is seeing the gallows which ended the lives of numerous criminals.
The Florida Heritage Museum, located next to the Old Jail, explores 400 years of St. Augustine’s rich Indian, Spanish and English history. Highlights at the museum are exhibits featuring Henry Flagler, the Civil War, and the Seminole Wars.
